Enjoy History and the Beach with an Off-Season Vacation Rental in Savannah this Summer

If you always wanted to tour Savannah Georgia’s Historic District, and yet play in the ocean on nearby Tybee Island, you are in luck this summer.

Many vacation rentals in the famed Historic District are charging off-season rates for the months of June, July and August.

These rates are at least 10% lower than in-season rentals, and can help stretch your vacation dollar significantly.

Best of all, you can still enjoy all the wonderful history and beach activities that Georgia’s oldest city has to offer.

For example, by staying in a downtown Historic District vacation rental, you can roll out of bed and walk to each one of the city’s famous squares, built by General James E. Oglethorpe in 1733 (and thereafter).

Some squares, like Pulaski Square, were named after Revolutionary war figures.  (Count Pulaski was the highest ranking foreign soldier to die during the American Revolution).

Other squares were named for prominent governors or colonists. Franklin Square, for example, was named for Benjamin Franklin who served as Georgia’s Colony Agent to London during the colonial period. It now features the First African Baptist Church and City Market.

During the summer months, it’s advisable to walk the squares early in the day or early evening to avoid the hot, mid-day sun.

Fortunately, you can make a quick trip to the beach in the afternoons. All you have to do is follow the river to find Tybee Island, a wonderful beach that hasn’t succumbed to excessive commercialism. It’s about 20 minutes by car from the Historic District.

The beach is free and open to the public. It is enjoyed by both locals and tourists alike, and has many places to park for day-trippers.

Keep in mind that renting a vacation rental at the beach can be more expensive than downtown. The beach rentals are in high season, while many properties in downtown Savannah are charging off-season rates. So, to get the best of both worlds, at more affordable prices, it’s best to stay in the Historic District during the summer months.
